Dual Faced Citizenship

See, our passport also red one.
It was something denied to Singaporeans despite years of clamour for dual citizenship. Even Americans who have taken up citizenship here have been reminded by the Immigration & Checkpoint Authority (ICA) to surrender their USA passport. Current regulations reflect the longstanding policy of the U.S. Department of State that no person should be in possession of more than one valid, or potentially valid, passport at any one time.

Yet prime minister Lee Hsien Loong as good as collected a Korean passport when Seoul city's mayor Park Won-soon awarded him an honorary citizenship on Thursday morning (Dec 11). And it's not the first time either. Earlier this year, apparently he received another foreign passport in London on the quiet.

When Lee Kuan Yew was presented with the Order of Honour in January by Leonid Moiseev, Russia's Ambassador to Singapore, it wasn't clear if citizenship was part of the package. But there was definitely a red passport in the press photo, next to the bluish medal first conferred on Lee by Russian President Vladimir Putin on September 10 last year in conjunction with the old geezer's 90th birthday.

Only a few days ago, PM Lee said that the next General Election will be a “deadly serious fight”. It's starting to look more serious than we can imagine. Can a Korean citizen be elected prime minister of Singapore?

Mahathir was really miffed when he learnt that Putrajaya had appointed German national Christoph Mueller as CEO-designate of Malaysia Airlines under its restructuring plan.  Dripping with sarcasm, he told Malaysiakini, "I am worried, if we do not believe in ourselves, one day when we need a prime minister, we can get a white man because he is 'smarter' than us."

That's the difference between Malaysia and Singapore.

  1. You forget that when Mahathir had heart problems LKY offered to send the renowned Australian heart surgeon, the late Dr. Chang to perform by-pass operation. True to his belief in his own people he refused the offer and the operation was performed successfully by a Malaysian surgeon. Mahathir, unlike our own Mandarins, always put his money where his mouth is. He is no hypocrite.

  2. I used to dislike Mahathir. But think of it, he is not a bad person after all. He may not be diplomatic when airing his views but at least he said what he feels. No bulls as far as he is concerned. Unlike somebody here who said what were not in his mind. Seriously can anyone believe a fishball stick can cause the PM to change his policy by creating another ministry to overlord PUB & NPark?

    1. It is a keuh lapis government. Just continue to add layers to cover the inefficiencies. What did the inappropriately named Minister Grace Fu do? Looking at grass patches. The job of a grass cutting supervisor done by a million dollar Minister. Sigh.

  3. Why can't they just take the award and politely decline the citizenship since they are already holding Singapore citizenship? Wouldn't that show more integrity? And shouldn't a leader do just that ? Show some integrity.

    1. He should be awarded Honorary Citizenship & Comrade from North Korea instead. And he should graciously accept it with the highest accolades that he and his party deserves.

  4. How come the Shit Times never made a meal of the dual citizenship ? Just look at the lengths they try to make a devil out of WP ?

Just compare our PAP Govt's governance of our CPF savings to WP's governance of Aljunied Town Council, which one lacked more transparency & accountability ?

By the way, our competent PAP Govt still cannot answer the question as to why the incompetent Malaysian Govt can still pay a much higher interest compared to our CPF savings ? Some more no such additional SHIT condition like that 4% interest subject to a maximum cap of 60K ?

Does it mean to say our useless husband & wife team is only 50% competent compared to their Malaysian counterparts ?

  5. On the quiet ?

You mean they try not to report it or the newspapers editiors here will be threatened with the stick if they ever report it.

Just like the last time they were threatened about publishing someone with any smile in the news ?

  8. "The position of the Singapore Government is that dual citizenship is not allowed. The laws regarding Singapore citizenship are found in the Constitution of Singapore." (Wikipedia)

What about our Prime Minister having dual citizenship? I guess we can only quote from George Orwell: All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others.

  10. Mahathir is just an old sourpuss unable to express his regret for not negotiating a lucrative ministers' mentor or senior minister post before handing over the premiership. It is just his way of saying that a white man can do a better job as PM than the incumbent.

    Saycheese

    2. Mahathir appears to have mellowed towards LKY and shown a lot of restraint: "I excuse him. He's 90 years old so we give him allowance for age. Like how I expect people to give me allowance also. I'm also old. I'm 88 years old."

But then the cynic in him cannot resist this dig: "He's entitled to his own opinion. We live in a free world where there is free speech, especially in Singapore."
